Driving a Van
Driving a van may seem challenging, especially for those who don’t have much experience behind the wheel of one.
With these tips, you’ll be able to drive a van safely and confidently. Here are a few guidelines to help you manage the vehicle with ease.
Ask a Friend to Join You
Before setting off, consider bringing along a travel companion. Navigating unfamiliar routes and dealing with possible wrong turns can be stressful and distracting. If you are traveling alone, use the voice guidance on your navigation system or stop when needed to check the map and your route. However, the best option is to bring a friend who can act as your co-navigator.
A familiar companion provides support and a sense of safety if the driving experience becomes overwhelming. In tight or narrow spaces, you can also ask your friend to guide you from outside the van — for example during parking — to ensure there is enough space.
Travelling together makes your journey smoother and more enjoyable.
Preparation
Schedule: Before stepping into the driver’s seat, make sure you have enough time to complete your tasks without rushing. Avoiding hurry helps reduce stress and increases driving safety.
Get to know the vehicle: Before driving, familiarize yourself with the vehicle’s controls and equipment. This helps you feel more comfortable before you start your journey.
Refuelling: Open the fuel cap, fill the tank carefully, and close the cap tightly. All our vans run on diesel.
The refuelling guideline for vans is 1 litre per 10 kilometres driven. The tank is at least half full at the start of the rental, as we also offer prepaid refuelling for our customers.
While Driving
Follow speed limits: Always obey speed limits and adjust your driving speed according to traffic conditions.
Safe distance: Maintain a sufficient distance from the vehicle ahead. This gives you more time to react to sudden situations.
Lane changes: Always use your turn signal and carefully check the side mirrors before changing lanes. Pay attention to the blind spot and remember that a van is large and can also be heavy.
Caution in narrow spaces: Drive especially slowly and carefully in tight areas. Be aware of your surroundings and make sure there is enough space. Be extra careful when reversing, as a van is longer than a passenger car.
Be aware of the environment: Pay attention to weather conditions, especially during heavy rain, icy roads, or very snowy conditions.
Mirrors and Visibility
Adjust mirrors correctly: Set the side mirrors so you have a clear view behind and beside the vehicle. Properly adjusted mirrors help you better observe your surroundings.
Height: A van is taller than a passenger car. Make sure you are aware of the vehicle’s height, especially in low-clearance areas. Avoid entering parking garages if possible. The driver is always responsible if the vehicle hits barriers, sprinklers, or other overhead structures.
Focus on Driving
Stay calm: Stay calm and focused while driving. Do not let distractions—such as your phone—affect your concentration.
Full attention on the road: Avoid all distractions such as eating or using your phone while driving. This helps you concentrate fully on traffic.
